Lake Taneycomo Bass Fishing: The Secret Fishery Below the Trout Zone
When anglers think of Lake Taneycomo, trout fishing immediately comes to mind. And rightfully so – the cold tailwater below Table Rock Dam creates one of the best trout fisheries in the Midwest. But here's what most visitors don't know: the lower section of Lake Taneycomo offers excellent bass fishing that rivals many lakes in the region.
Understanding Lake Taneycomo's Two Personalities
Lake Taneycomo is a 22-mile impoundment on the White River, flowing from Table Rock Dam to Powersite Dam near Forsyth. The lake has two distinct zones:
Upper Lake (Dam to Branson)
- Cold water releases from Table Rock Dam (48-58°F year-round)
- Premier rainbow and brown trout fishing
- Stocked heavily by Missouri Department of Conservation
- Most fishing pressure concentrated here
Lower Lake (Rockaway Beach to Forsyth)
- Water warms as it flows downstream
- Supports largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, and panfish
- Significantly less fishing pressure
- Overlooked by most anglers focused on trout
Bass Fishing the Lower Taneycomo
Below Rockaway Beach, water temperatures rise enough to support healthy bass populations. While you won't find the numbers of Table Rock or Bull Shoals, the quality fishing and lack of pressure make it worthwhile.
Best Bass Areas
Rockaway Beach to Forsyth Section:
- Rocky banks and bluff walls
- Old submerged road beds
- Brush piles and laydowns
- Docks with deeper water
Near Powersite Dam:
- Tailwater area below the dam
- Deep holes and current breaks
- Rock structure along channel
When to Fish for Bass
Spring (April-May): Bass spawn on a similar schedule to area lakes. Look for sheltered coves with gravel bottom, docks and boat houses, and secondary points near spawning flats.
Summer (June-August): The warmest water temps make summer prime time for Taneycomo bass. Try early morning topwater fishing, target shade-seeking bass under docks, and fish deeper structure during midday heat.
Fall (September-October): As shad move into the lower lake, bass feeding increases. Follow baitfish schools, work points where creeks enter, and use crankbaits and swimbaits.
Effective Techniques
The lower Taneycomo isn't vast, so finesse techniques often work best:
- Wacky rig along seawalls and docks
- Ned rig for finicky bass
- Shaky head worked slowly on bottom
- Small swimbaits matching forage
- Spinnerbaits for covering water
Don't Ignore the Other Species
While targeting bass on lower Taneycomo, you'll likely encounter channel catfish, white bass during seasonal runs, and excellent panfish including bluegill and crappie.
Combining Trips: Trout in the Morning, Bass in the Afternoon
One of the best ways to fish Taneycomo is to combine species:
Morning Session (Upper Lake): Fish the cold tailwater for trout using fly gear or ultralight spinning, focusing on the dam area to Branson.
Afternoon Session (Lower Lake): Move downstream past Rockaway Beach, switch to bass tackle, and target shaded structure as temps peak.
This gives you the best of both worlds and a full day of diverse fishing.
